What is an online AGM?

An online AGM is essentially a recurring online event at which board members can put important matters to their members for discussion and, where relevant, a vote. Where members were previously accustomed to meeting in person, it is now legally possible to hold the AGM partly or fully online within a secure meeting platform with voting functionality. There are three formats.

The first format is where the board meets in person for the meeting while members can watch, chat and vote from their own location via a secured online environment.

The second format is where the board dials in via video connection from home or the office and members can also watch, chat and vote from home. In this case nobody meets in person, everything happens online, yet the meeting takes place in full.

The third format is hybrid. The meeting takes place in person at a venue as usual, with members able to attend physically, join the discussion and vote. But members can also participate digitally from home and cast their vote. A hybrid AGM therefore gives members the freedom to choose whether or not to attend in person.
