Presentation of the 2024 Culture Plan for the City of Rotterdam

Every four years, the City of Rotterdam presents the Culture Plan in a festive way. During this event, it is announced which cultural institutions will receive subsidies. This assignment from the City of Rotterdam was the start of the current collaboration between Valo and the City of Rotterdam.

An inclusive event for the regional audience

The presentation of the Culture Plan took place in September 2020 at Theater Zuidplein, where due to the measures only 30 people were allowed to attend in the hall. To create a larger reach for the regional audience, this was scaled up to a hybrid event.

Inclusivity played a major role here: culture lovers who would otherwise not receive an invitation or who could not travel because of health reasons could now follow the festive presentation and enjoy the dance performances and surprising acts. Everything sharply in frame and crystal clear in sound!

Preparation

Valo played an active role in thinking along with the programme and broadcasting the event. The event was chosen to be livestreamed via Vimeo and made available online afterwards. The festive event lasted one hour, and the presentations were interspersed with dance and music. Thanks to the tight run of show, the transition between guest speakers, dance acts and the presenter was seamless.

In preparation, we worked closely with the theatre technicians of Theater Zuidplein. A lighting plan was drawn up, show elements were coordinated and a clear division of tasks was made, which means we look back on a pleasant collaboration and a smooth broadcast.

Result

The number of online viewers was far higher than the number of people who had applied for subsidies. Moreover, the majority of online viewers watched the complete event from beginning to end. And that makes the virtual variant a great success according to the City of Rotterdam!

The event was watched back twice as often as it was watched live, and has been viewed more than 1,000 times in total. For the City of Rotterdam, this was a fine solution to still let the presentation take place.
